
Al Sergel served twenty-four years as the Director of Bands at Northwest Missouri State University and retired from thirty seven years of full-time teaching in 2004. During his tenure at Northwest he conducted the University Wind Symphony, the Bearcat Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and the Northwest University Orchestra. He taught graduate and undergraduate conducting, percussion studio and methods, and graduate instrumental music education classes. He was a co-director of the Northwest Summer Music Camps and campus director of the Summer Marching Auxiliaries. Prior to his appointment at Northwest, he directed very successful band programs (6-12) in Ft. Worth, Texas and Auburndale, Florida.
Currently Sergel is active as a conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the United States. He is the conductor of the Platte City Community Band, a member of the percussion section and board of directors for the Northwinds Symphonic Band and teaches private percussion lessons. He serves on the Board of Directors for the FSU Band Alumni Association. And since 2007 he has been an adjunct faculty member at Missouri Western State University.
Sergel’s percussion solos are published with JPM Music and include; snare drum, multiple percussion, timpani and keyboard works for junior high and high school level students. In addition, he has written a “Handbook for Concert Band Warm-ups” and “Tetra-Teaching 4 Technique” and has arranged Warm-Up Chorales and Tone-Technique & Time Exercises for Middle School, Junior High and High School Concert Bands. His membership in professional organizations includes, the National Bandmasters Association (NBA), College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), Missouri Bandmasters Association, Iowa Bandmasters Association, Nebraska Bandmasters Association, Music Educators National Conference (MENC), Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA), Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Phi Beta Mu.
