Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Gavin holds a B.S. and M.M. degree from Northwest Missouri State University and was a graduate student at the University of Kansas studying composition with professor James Barnes. From 2004 to 2006 he served as a graduate assistant for the University of Kansas bands with Dr. John Lynch, Director of Bands.
His music is known for incorporating rich harmonies and dramatic counter lines. Both students and teachers find his music to be accessible and enjoyable to play. Many high school bands have received superior ratings at contest performing his works. Gavin has received several commissions throughout the United States including a grant from the Iowa Arts Council. He was also the winner of the University of Kansas New Music Ensemble Composition Contest. An avid horn player, Gavin has performed with the Topeka Symphony, University of Kansas Wind Ensemble, the KU Orchestra the Lawrence City Band, Platte City Band, Olathe Civic Band, Atchinson Community Orchestra, Lee's Summit Orchestra and many other ensembles. Gavin currently resides in Olathe, KS with his wife Stacy and stepson Alex.
