Born in Huntingdon, Tennessee, Alan Kinningham holds a B.S. degree in music education from the University of Tennessee at Martin, a M.M. degree in music composition from Texas A&M – Commerce, and a D.M.A. degree in music composition from the University of Memphis. His primary teachers of composition include Don Freund, James Richens, Gene Rush, Richard Stef, Ron Yates, Dwight Gatewood, and Gilbert Carp. His training includes both contemporary genres and commercial/jazz. Dr. Kinningham is the Director of Bands at Covington High School in Covington, Tennessee and is an adjunct faculty member at Dyersburg State Community College. An award-winning member of ASCAP and a multiple recipient of Who’s Who in American Education, he has used his compositional skills to write music that is stylistically attainable for the younger musician while maintaining aesthetic integrity. Current pieces published by JPM Music Publications include Enter the Brave, Little River Hatchie, . . . of Fables and Gnomes, and Psallos and Dance.
